Equine Behaviour Therapy

The key to resolving behavioural problems in horses, lies with having a true understanding of the horse's nature, and by appreciating how evolution brought them to where they are today. By understanding and acknowledging the horse�s biological needs and desires, we can begin to unravel any unwanted/undesireable behaviour. It doesn't matter what the behavioural issue is, there is always a reason behind it. The role of Equine Behaviour Therapy is to work with owners to get to the root cause of their horse's behavioural problems and provide an effective retraining programme to allow their horse to overcome their problems in their own way and time. Working closely with the owner it is important to take a step back and look at every aspect of the horse's daily life, including: feed, pasture, exercise, stabling, companions, rugs, tack and their general physical health and well being. It is only by building a complete picture of the horse that you can begin to unravel the unwanted behaviour.

Holistic Horse Help (HHH) was founded in 2007 by Sue Brown, Veterinary Physiotherapist (ACPAT Cat A), MCSP, BHSAI, Recommended Associate of the Intelligent Horsemanship Association, with the goal of �Helping Horses to Help People�. Inspirational, informative, friendly and supportive, Sue has the benefit of recognized qualifications in both veterinary physiotherapy and equine behavioural work. Her experience enables her to offer a holistic treatment approach to either physical or behavioural issues. Sue is a freelance equine behavioural and physical therapist. Based in Stafford, Staffordshire, she works throughout the UK. A variety of physiotherapy and teaching techniques are offered, including individual sessions, clinics working with your own horse, and workshops using horses trained with Intelligent Horsemanship methods (workshops are held in conjunction with Sandra Williams and Natural Horse Sense). With over 20 years working with horses, Sue has a wide range of experience. Qualifying in 2008 through the Royal Veterinary College as a Veterinary Physiotherapist, she is a Category A member of ACPAT (the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Animal Therapy). A BHS qualified riding instructor, Sue holds the Monty Roberts Preliminary Certificate of Horsemanship and is an Intelligent Horsemanship Recommended Associate. Inspired in her ridden work by Ride With Your Mind (pioneered by Mary Wanless), Sue has studied with many great horse people. Currently studying towards an MSc in at the Royal Veterinary College, Sue is a qualified Equine Body Worker (offering Equine Massage as well as Equine Physiotherapy). She is also studying Equine Touch. Sue loves the work, the people, the animals and the variety! The knowledge she has built up from her equestrian background, combined with her massage and physiotherapy work, enables her to offer a truly holistic approach to working with both you and your horse.

Struggling to find Horse Bedding?

Another option that is gaining popularity is the use of wood pellet bedding. Wood pellets are a by-product of the lumber industry and consist of wood fibres that have been sorted by size, compressed, heat treated and sterilized to remove tars, oils, hydrocarbons and other allergens. When water is added to the pellets they expand in size and can absorb 9 times more liquid than regular shavings. Using wood pellets can reduce the amount of waste you are removing from your stables and lower the costs of stall bedding. In addition, wood pellet bedding composts much quicker than shavings or straw which often do not fully compost or take a long time to decompose. As wood pellets expand with use, the product that ends up in the compost system has a much smaller particle size that breaks down quickly and easily. The Art of Using Wood Pellet Bedding Using wood pellet bedding is indeed an art form as many of the �converted� will tell you. It definitely takes a bit of practice to use wood pellets well and you really do need to give yourself some time to get used to them.
